Born in Nagasaki in 1954 and a UK resident since the age of five, Ishiguro is now regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary literature.

An exceptional literary career

Author of acclaimed novels such as The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go, Ishiguro has achieved immense critical and popular success. These works, adapted into films, explore universal themes like memory, time, and personal illusions. With his introspective style and unmatched narrative mastery, Ishiguro delves into the human condition and the tensions between cultures with remarkable subtlety.

His latest novel, Klara and the Sun, published in 2021, examines the relationship between artificial intelligence and humanity, reaffirming his ability to tackle contemporary issues with profound philosophical depth.

A rare and symbolic honor

The title of Companion of Honour, created in 1917 by King George V, is limited to just 65 living recipients. It recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their fields. By joining this exclusive circle, Ishiguro sees his work acknowledged as an essential contribution to global culture. This honor underscores the universal impact of his literary achievements, which transcend national and cultural boundaries.

A ceremony with other notable recognitions

In the New Year’s Honours, King Charles III also recognized over 1,200 British citizens for their achievements in various fields. Actress Carey Mulligan was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her outstanding film career and social commitment. Known for her roles in Drive and Promising Young Woman, Mulligan is a key figure in modern cinema.

Actor and activist Stephen Fry was also honored for his work with the NGO Fauna and Flora International and the charity Mind, dedicated to supporting individuals with mental health issues. His commitment illustrates the strong link between artistic creation and humanitarian causes.

Tributes to sports and politics

In the world of sports, Gareth Southgate, former manager of the England national football team, was knighted for his eight years of service and his leadership in two European Championship finals. Athletes like paralympic sprinter Hannah Cockroft and mountain bike Olympic champion Tom Pidcock were also recognized.

In politics, London Mayor Sadiq Khan was honored for his third term and dedication to the city. Additionally, the King paid tribute to whistleblowers and victims of the British Post Office scandal, who were unjustly accused of theft due to faulty software.
