DAG Foundation Prize

The literary world is buzzing with the launch of the $20,000 DAG Prize for Literature, an exciting opportunity designed to uplift early-career writers whose prose expands the possibilities of American writing. Awarded annually, this new prize supports innovative approaches to form, content, and genre—encouraging authors to explore what more prose literature can be and do. The recipient will have already published one book of prose and will receive the funds to develop a second, substantially underway project.

With a strong commitment to supporting transformative writing, the DAG Foundation hopes the prize will meaningfully contribute to the evolution of American prose. Whether through bold experimentation, imaginative hybrid forms, or unexplored subject matter, the DAG Prize aspires to push the boundaries of what readers expect from contemporary literature.

Focus on innovation

True to its mission, the DAG Prize is geared toward prose that dares to experiment in novel and exciting ways. Writers who apply should be able to demonstrate a commitment to innovation in their first book—published by a nationally distributed U.S. press—and have a second project well on its way. The $20,000 prize can be used for various stages of that project, including research, writing, editing, workshops, and residencies, ensuring that the selected writer has the resources to carry their work to completion.

By focusing on early-career authors who have yet to receive prominent recognition, the DAG Foundation seeks to shine a light on voices forging new paths. At the heart of this prize is a belief that American prose can—and should—continue to evolve, challenging both the author and the reader to think beyond traditional literary boundaries.

Eligibility requirements

To be considered for the DAG Prize, applicants must have:

  • Published one book of prose (in English) with a nationally distributed U.S. press. Online or self-publication does not fulfill this criterion, nor do books published outside the U.S. or in a non-English language.
  • A second prose project, written in English, that is substantially underway and intended for publication in the U.S.
  • Residence in the United States as of the application deadline (March 15, 2025).
  • Not won or been a finalist or shortlisted for major literary prizes such as the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, PEN America Literary Awards, and more.
  • Not published a second book of prose or have a second book of prose under contract by the application deadline.

Additionally, the DAG Foundation does not accept nominations from third parties (including agents, editors, or mentors).

How to apply

The application deadline for the 2025 DAG Prize in Literature is March 15, 2025, by 11:59 pm. Applications open on February 1, 2025. On the application page, candidates will be asked to provide:

  • A short bio (250 words maximum)
  • Information about their first book (with copies requested from finalists in April)
  • A CV or résumé (3 pages maximum)
  • A 500-word project description outlining its subject, artistic innovations, and an approximate timeline for completion
  • A 25-page excerpt from the new project

No letters of support are required or accepted. Writers are encouraged to focus on articulating their creative vision and the innovative thrust of their second project.

Looking ahead

By centering on originality, boundary-pushing ideas, and a dedication to the future of American prose, the $20,000 DAG Prize promises to play a key role in spotlighting emerging talent.
